Hello friends, sorry I took such a long blog break... I've been a busy lady! What have I been doing you ask? Well.... there's lots of exciting news....

I will be starting a business class soon which I'm really looking forward to and I am making plans to enroll in Portland's Jewelry Academy in the fall! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am about this, it's something I've been wanting to do for a very long time now. Learning to work with metal will open up so many new possibilities... I've already been sketching out my designs and can hardly wait!

So I just completed the last in a series of four shows and man am I tired! It was a blast! Crafty Wonderland's Holiday show was especially amazing... A big thank you to everyone who showed up! I met so many great people and received such positive feedback. I feel so lucky to live in a city as supportive as Portland! I Got Glasses!

I feel like a new lady! After years of working on jewelry so close to my face it turns out I'm nearsighted! I had to find out the hard way... the DMV told me I couldn't see very well when I went in to renew my license. Instead of getting bummed out I was actually really excited because it meant that I could go to Hollywood Vintage and pick out a pair of fancy vintage frames. It's amazing how well I can see now!

Halloween!

I've been working on my Halloween costume all day and am so excited about how it turned out! I found the most spectacular black Gunne Sax dress at Goodwill and it fit like a glove. I altered it today and have transformed it into a the perfect little number for a 1920's circus performer. I am working on a headpiece and already have the perfect shoes. I will admit, I've been ridiculously obsessed with all things old-time circus lately... it began with me watching Carnivale and moved onto me reading Water For Elephants and ordering Step Right This Way (The circus photography of Richard Kelty). I'll be spending Halloween evening at Slabtown watching The Silent Numbers performance... and I'll definitely post pictures when I have them!

Hard to believe it's that time of year again... but I'm starting to plan for upcoming Holiday Shows! I'll keep you posted with dates as I fine tune things but until then just know that I may be at this year's Crafty Wonderland (I'll find out if I was accepted in a couple of days) and I'll definitely be doing a trunk show at Flutter in early December as well as having an open house sale at my place (also early December). I'm looking forward to it all, now I just have to get busy so I can have enough jewelry to go around!

Vacation Notes

I had such a great trip back home! I was in Rhode Island visiting friends and family for a week and a half. I got to spend lots of time at the beach and watched some great movies with my mom (Coco was my favorite!), fell asleep listening to the waves at night, went to the amazing Brimfield fleamarket and found lots of treasures to turn into a whole new collection of jewelry (stay tuned... I'm so excited to show you!), took the ferry to Block Island, ate tons of delicious seafood, went to an outrageous wedding and took the train to New York to visit my cousin and my oldest friends. It was so relaxing... just what I needed!

Check out the new music video from local Portland band, the Builders and the Butchers. I was already a fan of their music and now I love them even more! Their amazing video was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Henry Darger and was styled using props from one of Portland's coolest shops, Flutter (http://www.flutterclutter.com where my jewelry is now being sold). And... My butterfly locket necklace is used throughout the video!

Historically Low Tide

On Tuesday, there was an historically low tide along the Oregon coast. My friend Laura and I left at 5am to drive to Cannon beach to check it out. We were not sure what to expect... Apparently at some beaches there were exposed shipwrecks and at others there were wildly exposed tidepools. Even though I grew up on the East coast right on the ocean, I'd never experienced anything like this! It was really breathtaking to get a glimpse at what's normally hidden far below the surface of the water. Besides the massive starfish and sea anenomes, crabs, shrimp, various little fish, clams, muscles and barnacles, I was introduced to a mysterious creature called the nudibranch (which is a basically a really gorgeous sea slug with many different varieties). We had breakfast and explored a less populated section of beach. Stopped at an antique store and ate fresh strawberries in a field of daisies. All in all, a fantastic day of adventure with Laura and her awesome dog, Moo.

Camping Adventure

I just got back from a really great camping adventure with some work buddies. We stayed at Lost Lake for two days and had a great spot with a view of the Lake. We got caught in some rain which we were pretty unprepared for and there was still snow in places (so much for the bathing suite I packed!). We cooked A LOT, hung out by the fire and explored all around the Lake... It was such a good getaway!

Merchant's House Museum

Such a perfect birthday adventure. Driving through the woods to get to Cannon beach was equally as beautiful. Went on a nice walk, dug my toes into the wet sand, watched the birds and bryan trying to fly his butterfly kite. Had raspberry beer and an oyster burger. So wonderful!

At first I was feeling a little impatient. I thought I had messed everything up and that nothing would ever grow. But then the beautiful little sprouts started inching their way out of the soil. Looks like I'll have my heirloom tomatoes, snap peas, green beans, cilantro, basil and mint after all. The next project is to clear a spot in the yard for some spinach, cucumbers and zucchinni.

My last few days off were filled with treasure hunting and I couldn't be more satisfied with my newest second-hand acquisitions: piles of antique lace, little teal roses (both for wrapping Paper Treasure orders), some vintage books, vintage picture frame (you'll see it soon in new jewelry photos!), vintage chess box, Zadie Smith's White Teeth (which I've been meaning to read for a while now), a new black planter for my succulents, an amazing moped book from the 70's, a blue grocery tote bag, a silver candle holder and of course, some jewelry components. And you know what? I didn't spend more that $25. I love you Portland!!

Holiday Update!

Happy Holidays, Friends! I appologize for such a long absence! I've been without a computer for awhile now, but not to fear... I've been very busy creating new jewels! The Xtabay and Mink Boutique in Portland, Oregon have newly restocked so if you're in the neighborhood go check them out.

And, I have a few Holiday Shows lined up...

I'm kicking things off with a Black Friday Art and Gift Sale at The Jam (2239 SE Hawthorne)... hosted by Brenda Dunn of the former Garment Boutique. I will be doing another show there closer to Christmas in addition to a trunk show at the Xtabay (stay tuned for more details!).

In other news, my brand new website should be live in a few days! The etsy shop will be updated with all the new goods just in time for the Holidays... there will be lots of new necklace styles to chose from plus a new addition to the Paper Treasue line... vintage-style charm bracelets!

Took advantage of the amazing summertime weather here yesterday and went on the longest walk ever... Walked down under the bridges, sat along the water and watched the boats going by. Checked out the skate park and went to a sushi places where the sushi comes around the table on a train set! Stopped at a thrifting spot and found some excellent jewelry pieces, rented a great movie (Francis Ford Coppola's Youth Without Youth) and called it a day!

The Fashion Show.

The Mercury Fashion Show was amazing! Thanks to everyone who came out for it! I'll be posting lots more pictures from the show so stay tuned... There will also be video footage soon. Mercury Fashion Show!!

I was scrounging around the treasure trove of the glorious BINS when I happened upon these beauties.... I knew they had to be mine! The painting with the deer figurine, perfect! The vintage shelf? Amazing! The shelf needed a bit of love... the beautifully patterened paper was coming off in many places and needed to be re-glued and the whole thing needed to be reinforced with new nails. It has a folding door that closes with leather snaps and fits perfectly in my little studio next to my jewelry table. It's currently serving as a display piece for the zines I've collected and the artist books I made in college.

We keep getting these little breaks in the weather that make me think winter might just be over. I've finally been able to safely leave my umbrella at home and wear my favorite little flats again. Since I don't have a car, I mostly walk to get around. It's such a nice way to see my neighborhood... I notice something new everytime. I snapped these on my way home from work not that long ago.

Happy 2008 Everyone! I apologize for the long delay between postings and new works. I had a relaxing holiday here in Portland and enjoyed spending time with my boyfriend, our fat cat and some good friends. It took me some time to snap out of vacation mode but I'm back with lots and lots of new jewelry to kick off the new year. Some of these new pieces can now be found in the Etsy shop, others are on their way and will be posted all week, starting tomorrow... Why Shipwrecks?

Perhaps you are curious why I decided to name all of my necklaces after shipwrecks?

Here, my darlings, is why:

*I grew up by the ocean and spent all my summers gazing out at the sea.

*I loved collecting sea glass and combing the beaches for whatever the sea might leave for me.

*When I first began my jewelry line I needed a way to categorize and name my pieces but assigning them arbirtary women's names didn't appeal to me.

*Around the same time I happened to be watching lots of public broadcasting shows about deep sea dives and whales and shipwrecks... I was mesmerized by the lost treasure that was being escavated from the wrecks! I started imagining a jewelry line that could look as magical as if it had just been recovered from the bottom of the ocean.

*The name Paper Treasure also made me think about including some kind of extra special paper-related packaging or keepsake... hence the tags that come with each necklace bearing a little information about the shipwreck it was named for.

I kept seeing these adorable plants in pictures of other people's homes and have been admiring them for some time. I finally got around to planting my very own and am quite pleased with them so far... I've never had plants before so wish me luck!

Lots of things are in the works. A big shop update, new jewelry, perhaps a few ads in the coming months. I'm even having pins printed up. And, I'll keep you posted... I think I'm going to set up a shop on the new e-commerce site, Mintd (which is sort of like another etsy). I'm feeling more determined than ever to make this whole craft venture work!
